Comparison: më … se and "the most"
The comparative and the superlative both use one word, më "more": më i madh — "bigger", qyteti më i madh — "the biggest city". The context tells them apart: se "than" means a comparison, a definite noun before më means "the most".
More, less, as … as
The article and the adjective ending stay: më i madh, më e madhe, më të mëdhenj. After se a pronoun is in the nominative: më i gjatë se unë — "taller than me". You can also say sesa instead of se.
| pattern | meaning | example |
|---|---|---|
| më … se | more … than | më i madh se |
| më pak … se | less … than | më pak i shtrenjtë se |
| aq … sa | as … as | aq i madh sa |
| jo aq … sa | not as … as | jo aq i madh sa |
"The most"
The superlative is më and the adjective after a definite noun: qyteti më i madh — "the biggest city", vajza më e mirë — "the best girl". "Of all" is nga të gjithë, for feminine nga të gjitha. Without a noun the adjective takes a definite ending: më i miri — "the best one", më e mira — "the best one" (f.), më i gjati nga të gjithë — "the tallest of all".
The article after më
Më stands between the noun and the adjective, so the adjacency rule applies: in the nominative singular the article stays (djali më i mirë, vajza më e bukur), elsewhere it is të after më: vajzat më të bukura, Bleva makinën më të lirë.
Adverbs: no article
Adverbs compare the same way, only without an article: Ndihem më mirë — "I feel better", Sot është më ftohtë se dje — "Today it is colder than yesterday", më shumë — "more", më pak — "less". There are no irregular forms like "good — better": i mirë — më i mirë.
